Harsha Koda & Prabha Koda

Total Vote(s) : 472 | Total Testimonial(s) : 27

[•] Prabha and I have 'known' each other for longer then we have 'not-known' each other. We first met in high school - when were around 16. We have been married for 16 years now... and I don't think we have been apart from each other for more than 16 days. [•] We (almost) share a birthday. We (naturally) share a wedding anniversary :) [•] We have a common visiting card, we share a mobile phone, a home, a car... and more importantly a passion for travel... what more can I say! [•] If something has not been done before, we find a reason to do it. If something has been done before by someone else... we need to experience it ourselves! We believe in experiencing and experimenting... Prabha, more than me... after all she has even eaten a 'Gator Burger' (real alligator meat).

We are the best candidates because...

[•] In the year 2000 we bought our first car - the Maruti 800 DX AC 5 Gear model. TN 07 L 5818 it was called. We decided that day that we will not take public transport - trains, buses or flights, for the next 10 years and 'drive' to every part of India. We have kept to that plan. [•] Since then we have changed from Goldilocks (Zen) to Chiclet (WagonR) to Guns n Roses (Swift)... our cars :), driven over 300,000 Kms all over India, by ourselves and with friends. We have traversed over mountain passes, through streams, across deserts, on plateaus, along the coast and bypassed cities but our thirst to travel on road in India and the world has not been quenched. [•] Be it a meeting with a client in Mumbai, a wedding in Bangalore, tigers in Bandhavgarh or a grueling rally like the Raid-de-Himalaya we believe in a 'mantra' by the famous explorer Jacques Cousteau - il faut aller voir - lets go check it out for ourselves.

Our Travel Plan

[•] Day 0 [•] Route: We start from the Gateway of India through the hustle and bustle of Mumbai along the Western Expressway on the fringes of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and head towards Ahmedabad via Surat and Vadodara, ending at Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram. As a tribute to highway travel in India, we start our journey travelling on the best highways in India, including the very first expressway E1, which connects Vadodara to Ahmedabad. [•] Distance covered: approx. 500 kms [•] Day 1 [•] Route: Starting from Ahmedabad, we head bang West into the Gujarat coast and hit Jamnagar. We will be visiting the Marine National Park on the coral reef island of Pirotan, which is a unique ecosystem. [•] Distance covered: approx. 300 kms [•] Day 2 [•] Route: Starting from Jamnagar, brushing along the Little Rann of Kutch, maybe sighting some wild asses in the bargain, we head towards Udaipur. We plan to end the day at the spectacular Sound and Light Show at the City Palace. [•] Distance covered: approx. 500 kms [•] Day 3 [•] Route: Starting from the city of lakes, Udaipur, we drive right through the deserts of Rajasthan, via the famed Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti's tomb at Ajmer, and the pink city Jaipur, to finally reach Agra. Maybe if we're lucky, we can take a romantic break gazing at the Taj Mahal by moonlight. [•] Distance covered: approx. 600 kms [•] Day 4 [•] Route: Starting from Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh, we head south all the way down to Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. A more peaceful place to stay the night would be near the Buddhist stupa at Sanchi. [•] Distance covered: approx. 600 kms [•] Day 5 [•] Route: From Buddhist structures to pre-historic art, our journey takes us to the Bhimbatika caves. We intend to go back in time and experience how it felt to be under the ocean currents in the middle of India. We proceed to Pachmarhi, the only hillstation in the largest state of India. [•] Distance covered: approx. 300 kms [•] Day 6 [•] Route: After a relaxing night in the hills, we move further to the 'centre of India.' Nagpur is a city that is fast developing, keeping its culture intact. [•] Distance covered: approx. 300 kms [•] Day 7 [•] Route: Nagpur - Hyderabad. Heading into the Deccan Plateau, and experiencing the Hyderabadi Biriyani, we plan to shop for some exquisite bangles around the Charminar. [•] Distance covered: approx. 500 kms [•] Day 8 [•] Route: We exit this Southern state of Andhra Pradesh and head into Karnataka. Today, we intend to enjoy the post-monsoon green hills, combined with the rich red soil, which is so evident in this state. It will be a pleasure to experience the power and comfort of the Cedia on these long and winding country roads. We would end the day in a small town in Karnataka, the name of which starts with the letter 'B'. [•] Distance covered: approx. 500 kms [•] Day 9 [•] Route: We start travelling up North again, hitting the Golden Quadrilateral and enjoying the miles and miles of smooth tarmac upto Pune. Not to be missed is the view upto infinity at any point on this highway. We head towards wine country Nashik from Pune. [•] Distance covered: approx. 600 kms [•] Day 10 [•] Route: Getting a high not only after visiting vineyards near Nashik, but also from the heart-filled experiences of the trip, we head into take the chequered flag at Mumbai! [•] Distance covered: approx. 200 kms [•] 10 days later, after 5000 kms on the odo and covering over 7 states, we have experienced beaches, forests, wildlife, tribes, cities, forts, museums, shopping, lifestyle and the people that make India the best in the world!

Our Travelogue

[•] We have done a lot of driving-around in India and travelled in buses, trains and planes all over the US and in some parts of SE Asia ... notable among them are [•] Kerala trip: Chennai, Madurai, Kanyakumari, and up along the west coast of Kerala - Thiruvanthapuram, Kochi, cut across the verdant Idukki hills and back to Chennai. [•] West Coast Trip: Mumbai, Pune, Goa, all the way down the West coast of Karnataka to Kerala and the picturesque Vembanad lake... to head to Chennai. [•] East coast Trip: Chennai, Vijayawada, Vizag, up along the Orissa coast upto Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary; blessed by the sun god in Konark and looking out for Crocs and turtles in Bithrakanika. [•] Karnataka Trip: Started with a quest looking for my ancestral village (of Kodalapuram) and we ended up exploring northern Karnataka - the green hills, rich plains, breathtaking sunsets and of course, the sun-kissed beaches of Goa. [•] Trip-of-all-Trips: Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Warangal, across the state of Chattisgarh - our own Niagra at Jagdalpur, Marble Rocks at Bhedeghat in Jabalpur, the industrial town of Raipur, to the state where time stands still - Madhya Pradesh, to Panna, Khajuraho and the Mughlai khana at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, climbed the mountains at Uttarakhand, drove all along the Himalayas through Nainital, Binsar, Karnaprayag, Joshimath, Auli, Tehri, Mussoorie, Lakhamandal, Shimla in Himachal, Chandigarh, Manali, Rohtang, Dehradun, Mathura, visited the Sanchi Stupa and the timeless Bhimbetka near Bhopal, wen along to Nagpur and back .... 13 states, 40 days, 10,000 kms [•] Raid-de-Himalaya (India's highest, longest, toughest and most arduous car rally), Airtel One India Challenge (with over 200 cars from all over India) and numerous city rallies from TSD to treasure hunts... they have been competitive and grueling. [•] As the founder members of the Chennai Swift Club (http://chennai.swiftclub.org) we have organised a number of events for the people who simply love the Swift... true fans of the car. These event caught the attention of Maruti Suzuki and the motor sports community in Chennai... who initiated special awards in city rallies for members. [•] The Rally for the Blind is an annual event in Chennai for those who want to show they care for responsible Motorsport and humanity in one event... We have been winning awards for the last 3 years along with our blind navigator Sundaramurthy [•] Our most recent trip (June - July 2009) was to the 'center of India'... literally. Taking advantage of the delayed monsoon we headed from Nagpur to Bandhavgarh and Kanha National parks to see the Tigers in the scorching 45 degree heat. As we reached Kanha the first monsoon showers overjoyed us and the dancing peacocks. We then drove across the Deccan Plateau to Aurangabad to see the 'heritage caves' and paintings of Ajanta and Ellora and as we headed further west... we entered the full fury of the South West monsoon! [•] The latest adventure a couple of days ago, the Pune - Chennai non-stop drive. We did the 1250 kms drive in less than 20 hrs.

jacob

harsha loves driving so much and thats his second wife. he just enjoys driving like eating a good meal and he is just chanceless when he says i went to kolkatta driving his car, to kerala,to hyderabad, to maharashtra, madhyapradesh...top of all to himalayas driving his vehicle. i whole heartedly feel he deserves to compete in this challenege and if god willing let him be rewarded with the prize as a honour to his love of driving. kudos harsha. you will win !!!

Girija Chandran

I am voting for Harsha and Prabha as I personally know their passion for travel and driving . They are true travellers who explore a destination and understand the locals and get the essence of the place... They also are capable of coming back and sharing with us the experiences they have had, which inspire us to go on these explorative trips ourselves... If anyone deserves to win, they certainly do ! :)

Sadhana Ramchander

Many people theorise about being free-spirited and living life spontaneously, about responsible freedom, about sharing and togetherness, about roads less travelled. Harsha and Prabha don't talk about this...they only practise. And of course, they talk, passionately and a great deal, about their journeys on India's 'pot-holed roads', and through life.

Sangeeta

Who better than these 2 well traveled folks. These two can make it anywhere in the universe and given a chance would do it time and time again.Don't see 2 more deserving explorers than Harsha and Prabha.

Kamlesh Patel

Harsha and Prabha are the most CRAZY driving couple I have seen. True enthusiasts of travel, only second to me!!

Sivabalan Sekhar

honestly, hearing Harsha narrate his driving sojourns could kick-in a sense of fairytale with us... they certainly 've all d traits for pulling this off because they are a couple "who've been there & keep doing it"! driving has now become part of their DNA architecture - cheers folks!

Saraswati Sudhakar

Indeed. both Harsha and Prabha share a great passion for travel and i often envied them!they deserve to be in this enviable event..The Great Driving Challenge

Pradeep Raghunathan

I have known Harsha and Prabha for some 4 years now. It seems much longer though. These 2 ooze confidence and are great fun to be with. They are passionate about quite a few things they do in life - Their work, designing, Food - they really know their food and are real good food critics too. Their biggest passion though is driving and travelling. If there is some competition happening which requires people to drive, you will find Harsha and Prabha there. All the best guys, I sure wish you guys have great fun. And while you are at it, I guess you can incidentally, win the prize too :). All the best!!!!

KP

Think Driving and you can only picture Harsha & Prabha. Their passion for driving is such a given, that people talk of it as though it were their very nature to drive. This challenge looks so exciting to lay people such as me, am sure it must be such a opportunity for Harsha & Prabha to enjoy, drive, have fun and also perhaps, win the prize! I wish them good luck and safe driving!!!

S. Ponraj

I have known them for more than 15 years or so. Whenever they narrate their driving experiences (especially about their himalayan trip) I really wish that I could have gone with them! Winning or losing never matters! Have a nice and safe journey! We heartily wish all the best of luck!

Padma

Harsha and Prabha are two people who are not only passionate about their travels, but also take to roads less traveled. Their enthusiasm is amazing! I wish them good luck.

sushant and sweta

dera harsha sir, today when i saw ur profile here....i got scared....since today i was very confident i'm gonna win the race....but today i got a fear complex...anyways......darr ke aagey jit hai.....aise u must remember me....i'm the one who met u on orkut many days ago and asked about some races and all.........sir i wont say go win sir.....but if i got defeated by you i would be glad ...cos i dont know why but i always felt u like my "guru".....whenever i see u on orkut i get more inspired for races....and best of luck to you both...lets see what we r going to do.....but i bet...you'll get a good challenger......cos i'm sure that organisers will definitely select us......me and you definitely sir.... okies....you can see my profile as well... https://greatdrivingchallenge.com/application/1246034197355251/

Vasi

Harsha and Prabha are the coolest travellers I have ever met! And most of the time I envy them while they are on their "open ticket" journeys across India! I vote for them because they travel in a way that I can only dream of!

Isha Rathnam

What better than soulmates being completely in tune with each other on the drive! Harsha's passion for driving has made him stop using any mode of public transport to travel across the length and breadth of India which is an indicator of his passion & love to zip zap zoom on the roads, which would not be possible without his better half (in every sense!) Prabha who is an excellent navigator apart from matching his driving skills. All the best to them & m proud they are family ;) !

sonali kulkarni

Harsha and Prabha are my inspiration when it comes to travelling or driving. I still cannot believe they have travelled down from Chennai to Mumbai in 2007 just to meet me. Its amazing to see their passion, composed, happy and easy state of mind when they are travelling or even when they're planning their travel schedule. I not only want to vote for them but also cheer them and pray for their victory. They are my winners :)

Ramakrishna Alur

These Dudes are the coolest 'Drive Crazy' couples who can drive from Miami to Maine on I-95, and take a day of rest and start all over to drive from New York to California. I was their host for couple of weeks when these two were visiting USA, I was amazed at his knowledge of cars all makes and brands. His penchant for motor vehicles is insatiable and goes deep into the trivial details and enlightens the audience. I have always admired this couple for exploring India east to west, south to north and giving soul searching details of their travel. I have seen many drive their vehicles with passion but no one can come close to this couple in their passion to drive and explore the real rural India and enlighten others about their travel experiences. These two are made for each other and if "ONLY CARS COULD SPEAK and EXPRESS THEIR OPINION' THIS COUPLE WOULD BE VOTED THE "best" by all cars and vehicles irrespective of their owners. GO dudes, you are the best.

Ashu Prasad

Harsha and Prabha are a great couple, with lots of passion for driving and exploring all parts of India. Both have participated in many contests before and I fully support their nomination for this great contest. Couples like this are the nicest thing to admire on this earth. Best of luck for you young chennai's.

Professor V.K.Natraj

I have the highest appreciation of the skills and motivation of Harsha and Prabha. This was reinforced by watching them in action apart from following their activities and achievements. I wish them well.

UK

I have known the Koda's for sometime now and I always find it very hard to plan meeting them. Either they are away travelling to some far away part of India - they happen to never use public transport ! - or are at some rally driving somewhere or for someone. I have always been Jealous of how they have travelled so much in India and how they get away come what may. Besto you guys. a trip is in the offing !

a giridhar Rao

Harsha and Prabha - a more in-sync team you could not ask for!

navin gulia

We love these guys harsha and prabha. they are a rocking sweet couple. and as for their passion of driving and travel, if they tell me they are selling their house to travel around the world, i wouldn't be surprised. for all i know, they might have already done it. Love you guys Navin and Khushi

Deepa

I am voting for Prabha and Harsha, because they are passionate about driving, look cute, and because I've got to support my cousin Prabha :)!!

Naresh Kini

Hi Harsha & Prabha, Your profile is really so impressive, not come across anyone having so much passion for driving as the both of you. All my Best Wishes are with you.You should definitely come out winners.

vikod

Escapades a dash of romance great food - aint that the story of H & P!! - mapping, geolocating, sat radio, chaining tyres, rally driving to the Himalayas and living on Maggi!! haven't we done it all! way to go! guys! go VROOOM!

Frank Kettrell (USA)

Good luck Harsha. COntact me when your adventures are complete.

Anees

I usually dont write testimonials.. its not cos i am always busy its jus that i feel too lazy to write...but one line of yours in the blog made me write this...Both of you were without each other for 16 days in 16 yrs of marriage wow man..thats kewl guys..all the best guys..have a good TRIP...and hope my wife done read about 16 days in the blog...

Asha Menon

A perfect couple... Harsha loves to drive and Prabha loves to navigate, it is a passion for both of them. I have never seen such detailing in any other couple when chosing a driving route. It is almost like an obessesion with roads and maps. I am sure the people who travel with them in this trip will have a thing or two to learn from them. A PERFECT COUPLE!!!!
