Devaraj Jawahar & Prabha Jawahar

Total Vote(s) : 84 | Total Testimonial(s) : 18

We are the Jawahars - Prabha & Jawahar (aka - PJ & JD), with both of us having retired from active service - me as General Manager, Marketing from Siemens Ltd and Prabha as Executive with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce - both in Mumbai. I am an old Puneite having spent my entire schooling days in Pune and after nearly 44 years away from Pune - in Chennai, Erlangen(Germany), Mumbai, Delhi and Mumbai have got back to Pune to enjoy our retired life. My mode of conveyance for road usage has been exclusively - bicycle from 1959 to 1970, motorcycle from 1970 to 1977 and motor car from 1977 until now. I consider myself as a very safe user of vehicles on roads and, touch wood, have not got involved in a single accident as of now, apart from some skidding when riding cycle and mobike - mainly due to bad road surfaces. Driving a car is a passion for me and handling the same is my unique forte - never overspeeding, never straining the engine and always anticipating dangers from roads and other users of the way. Prabha has been lucky that she never needed to learn to drive - what with an excellently, calm and patient driver in me. Thanks to our various journeys by motor cycle and car, she has turned out to be an excellent navigator or co-pilot for me, guiding me with traffic and directions and as a moderator, if at all I go berserk with the driving task at hand. However, now that we have moved over to Pune where there is no metered taxies and the public bus system and autorickshaws are the pits, she has found it necessary to be on her own and so got herself a new driving licence, after going through a regular driving school. That makes her independent of me having to chauffer her around..

We are the best candidates because...

We are an excellent candidate for this adventure-cum-endurance trip as we have always loved driving through countryside while on all our explorations of places of interest that we have visited - both in India and Europe, since having come together in marriage. Also, I consider myself as one of the best road users as far as traffic rules and safety to myself and others are concerned, with an excellent record of safe and great driving and also having tutored both my children to be as good a driver as I am. My partner comes from a family who have had all types of cars and motorcycles and loves to have rides. In fact, one of her nephews is an enthusiastic Sholavaram car race participants and has also participated in the Royal Enfield challenges, including the trip to Leh in Ladakh and won accolades and prizes from the organisers. I have experience of useage of varied types of vehicles. Starting with the Java motorcycle for 7 years, the age-old Fiat and Ambassador that I have used of my in-laws', an Opel-Rekord 7 for 7 months, a 200D Mercedes for 4 years, a Maruti Omni (high Dome) for 4 years, a Firodia Trax-Town and Country for 2 years, a Tata Sierra for 4 years, a Ford Ikon 1.3 for 4 years, a Tata Indigo for 3 years and now a Getz Prime 1.3 GLS for 2 years plus. Autobahns and Expressways, both of us abhor as it is not only boring to drive on them, but also dangerous from the point of safety due to the speeds on it and the boredom that puts the driver to sleep, especially when the co-passengers have all fallen asleep. We have always used only the national highways and the country roads for all our drives, despite the fact that it takes more time. We always feel that it is better to reach the destination safe and relaxed, rather than tensed and tired after a long journey.

Our Travel Plan

We plan starting from Mumbai and driving through a circuitous route, setting off to Alibagh, Ratnagiri, Goa, Mangaluru, Ernakulam, Coimbatore, Ooty, Mysore, Bengaluru and on the return path, drive back via Kolhapur, Pune and finish at Mumbai. This route has been selected avoiding the much tempting Expressway and will only cover parts of the National Highways, thereby giving us an opportunity to update ourselves of their present conditions. The route covers around 3,000+ kilimetres and will provide the Cedia vehicle various terrain surfaces to explore, giving us too an idea of how it behaves under different type of driven surface and inclines. We have chosen for us a route covering the staid and well built NH4, a short, somewhat narrow NH48, the lovely coastal NH17, the wide and fast NH47, the hilly and winding NH212, the diving and to-be-cautious NH209 and finishing with the well acquainted and comfortable NH4. The route also is varied in the scenic presentation, making the drive at a leisurely pace of 300 to /350 kms a day, a very do-able one. The Cedia (I hope it will be a diesel one) will also be put to test of various types of road surfaces and inclines which must be of interest to the sponsors of this event. We are excited and only hope that we make it to the driving stage..

Our Travelogue

Being a Puneri, right from my early days in school, I have been independent of public transport for my conveyance needs. The city public transport system has helped me in sticking to me being independent with my own vehicle - initially it being a second-hand bicycle, then my Java mobike after which I graduated to owning an Opel- Rekord 7, a 200D Mercedez and then a host of other popular vehicles resting with a Getz Prime 1.3 GLS that I presently have. Some of the great travels that we have done together are : 1. Our Christmas Holiday in 1979 while in Germany, when we drove down with our 8-month old daughter from Erlangen to Marseilles to Madrid spending 3 days in Marseilles and 6 days in Madrid. The return journey was, particularly, exciting having driven through, non-stop from Madrid to Karlsruhe in Germany - a journey of around 1,800 kms (of which more than 500 kms was thro' lovely snowfall and snow-drenched autobahns) in a span of 19 hours, stopping only to have food and use the toilets. 2. The other great travel we did together was in India. It was prompted by the decision to take part in my IIT batch's 35th year college reunion at Allepey in Kerala - the thought occurred to both of us that we should make this visit a value-for-money affair. Not having gone on a long trip for quite some time, we decided to take a south India trip covering some unvisited places of interest and visitng friends and relatives whom we owed a visit from our side. A detailed preparation was made to chalk out the route and places and we set off on 14th Jan 05 from Pune covering Pune, Belgaum, Chickmagalur, Belur, Halebidu, Shravan Belgola, Mysore, Bandipur and Mudumalai forests, Ooty, Coimbatore, Palakkadu, Trishur, Guruvaayur, Ernakulam, Munnar, Tekkadi, Kumarakkom, Vaikom, Allepey, Kottaraikara, Kollam, Kovalam, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and reaching Mumbai on 12th Feb 05 - a distance of 5000 kms covered in 28 days. Simple rule followed - No driving after 7 PM and no lengthy halts for lunch. Breakfast and dinner was leisurely. 3. When I was posted in Erlangen on an assignment with Siemens AG, I had made a pact with my boss that whatever official visits I make while in Germany would be only by car so that we have an opportunity to various parts of Germany and Europe and it we do not have to spend extra from our pocket as official tours are paid for by the Company. Also having the vehicle there was no botheration of ticket bookings, packing, and sticking to strict timings, and best of all no hotel bookings required as we halted always away from the city (in villages) where paying guest accomodations were available aplenty and cheap. In this way we managed driving n-number of times from Erlangen to Berlin and back, to Dusseldorf and back, to Amsterdam and back, to Stressa, Milan, Rome and back. 4. Our first major or long drive in India was the Mumbai - Bangalore and back trip in 1982 when my younger brother got married. That was with my Mercedes that I had in Germany which I had brought along under the TRS. I was really skeptical about making the trip as I had never known Indian roads to be that safe and also because the car was a left-hand-drive one which everyone said is dangerous on highways. However, we underrtook it as a special offering for my parents who got driven in style from Pune to Bangalore and back. In retrospect, I think it was a good decision for that gave me the confidence that Indian roads are not, after all, that bad and a left-hand-drive vehicle is manageable on Indian roads as long as one is a little cautious in driving. 5. Both of us love to go, off and on, to Chennai - she because of having her parents and brothers there and I because of having a lot of friends. We have done this stretch at least once with each of our cars. I must make mention of the first Mumbai-Chennai trip that we made. This was in 1993. My father-in-law in Chennai was very ill and my wife wanted everyone at home to visit him. With all having to go our Bobo (the dog) posed a huge problem. And then Prabha's Mumbai sister and her 2 children also wanted to visit. It was Diwali time and train tickets to Chennai was impossible. I decided that we go driving - the whole palthan (gang) with the dog and, Prabha readily agreed. So a brand new Trax - Town & Country was purchased, the trial run was made to Lonavala and back and we set off with the first halt at Pune for the night. Next day morning, as we were saying bye-bye to Prabha's Pune sister, she could not express her envy that we were going on a nice trip to see the father. I casually remarked "Do not envy, Why don't you join us?" and, surprise of surprise, she agreed and with a 30 minutes' delay, she also boarded the vehicle. So 4 adults, 4 children and the dog set off for Chennai with night halts at Belgaum and Bangalore.

I have known Mr. Jawahar since my days from Siemens. He has great passion for driving and he has also done lot of crazy journeys with cars absolutely successfully. I wish him and Mrs. Prabha best of luck and I wish that they win this.

Virat

I've known Mr.Jawahar and Mrs.Prabha for a really really long time. They are my uncle and aunt. They have great passion for cars and greater passion for driving. They've gone on numerous drives across many states and they are the contenders to win this competition. Cheers uncle. do well :)

Puja

I have grown up sitting (or sleeping) in the back seat of the car, as Dad and mum have driven along the countryside. They are fantastic drivers who truly enjoy it :) Good luck !

Aditya Chaturvedi

Jawahar and Prabha are known to me for more than 20 years. Both are passionate enthusiasts on driving and I know them to be fans of big SUVs. They have undertaken really long journeys on their cars successfully. I wish them a successful participation in this event.

Vikrant

Jawahar,my maternal uncle is an excellent driver, has total control of the machine(car) and knows how to tame the machine to suit his style.

Vinay

Of course I am biased, but I can't think of a more perfect pair for this challenge than my parents. My dad loves driving, and my mother has had to-necessarily-become a great navigator. I wish them the very best.

Leo Prakash

Having known Jawahar since 1965 when we both attended college, I have no doubt that Jawahar with his technical skills, his calmness in all situations, his meticulous planning would be a worthy winner of this competition. I have seen him drive in India and know about his experiences not only in the european winters. He is gifted driver and a careful one as well and would be a fantastic role model for all drivers the world over. Leo

Viswa Panicker

It is a pleasure to be with JD while he is driving his automobile. I have never seen a passionate driver like JD .A mature driver resilient & obedient never seen or been in road rage even at the utmost level of provocation from rogue drivers. He is an example for an "Absolute Driver".If anyone deserves a recognition as "The Great Driving Challenger" your hunt for him/her ends here. It is irrevokably "JD "

Yogesh Joshipura

I have known the Jawahars for the last 35 years. They are extremely passionate about driving and have undertaken numerous long distance non stop drives in India and abroad.

S Ramachandran alias Chandru

Jawahars are fun-loving and enterprising

Vilas V Mahajan

I know Mr. Jawahar and Prabha, since more than 30 years as a colleague in Siemens. He has great passion, bordering on obsession , for driving. He has done lot of adventure car trips without any accidents. I wish him and Prabha best of luck and I am quite confident of they winning. They deserve to win !

Shridhar Krishnamurthy

I have known PJ & JD for over 25yrs and "their spirit of adventure has increased over time" with the zest for being behind the wheels and the meticulous planning this couple is a winner! Go PJ & JD all the best

R M Maindarkar

I have driven with Jawahar extensively in India and all over Europe. Having been an Air Force fighter Pilot and a hobby of long range driving in all 3 continents , I can with certainty say that Jawahar is one of the safest and soundest driver and he and Prabha will make a great team.

Prabhakar Konath

Jawhar and Prabha are avid amatuer rallying enthusiasts. They have taken various trips all over India. I remember hosting them when they made the trip to Alleppy/Quilon/ KK etc. I fervently hope they get selected.

R. Jairam

Devaraj Jawahar is a good friend of mine for over last 35 years. We were collegues working for the same organisation. Jawahar is a car freak. During last several years he has been owning various different cars. He loves driving a car and needs only the flimsiest of excuses to get into one and take off. When he comes down to Chennai from Mumbai for his holidays with his parents, he inavriably drives down. I have had the previlage of going on long driving trips with Jawahar. We were in Germany together for over an year. During this time, we toured a good part of Europe by car in all sorts of wheteher like blinding rains & mist, snow, slushes and so on. Great fun it was because I only had to relax in the car and enjoy, Jawahar doing all the driving. I see Jawahar as an eminently suitable cadidate to enter The Great Driving Challenge. I wish him all the luck.

Ram Bishu

JD and PJ are one of the most passionate couples I have met, passionate about whatever they do. While the object of their passion has consistently changed with time, driving is one passion that has stood by JD from 1970s when he used to drive motor cycle. I strongly recommend them for this tournament and wish them success

Mira Dalvi

Jawahar Uncle is a superb driver and has always had an adventure streak in him - i've been part of several road trips with them and hence cant think of anyone better than him and Prabha Maushi to be part of an event like this. wish you guys all the best!!
