Kunal A Chakranarayan & Uma

Total Vote(s) : 108 | Total Testimonial(s) : 8

We are a happy couple. What keeps us going? It is our fighting spirit. The husband, Kunal Chakranarayan is crazy about Manchester United. Give him an early evening from work and he's out on the field playing football for the local team Shivajians A division. Behind his laptop, at Idea Cellular, he is currently on a SIEBEL CRM project. While I, Uma, his naturally better half, am a free lance journalist. The fact that I enjoy talking as much as I do listening makes it easier to work in my field. We have a three-and-a-half-year-old boisterous son-Arin. His question every weekend is, "Are we driving to Goa?"

We are the best candidates because...

We have the drive. Kunal relishes being behind the wheel as much as I enjoy navigating. Road trips through the mighty Western Ghats, especially to Goa have been a favourite since we tied the knot, four years ago. A typical holiday begins early morning when we set out with no designated halts in mind. We stick to the straight road till an unbeaten track invites us. Then we have stumbled upon a beautiful clearing a little way off the main road in Mulshi that offered a super spectacular view of the lake. And we climbed up a small looking hill to gaze down on crystal clear sea in Agonda. And walked to the edge of a plain just outside Mahabaleshwar enroute Tapola to see tiny yellow and purple flowers on one rock. Lunch happens when we are hungry. Invariably it is at low profile stops where the food is just like home and the service with a real smile. More of an observer, while Kunal drives, it becomes essential for me to point out nature's little fascinating bits to him so that he doesn't miss them. Sunsets in the mountains, valleys in the rain, trips to the Arabian sea, eating karvanda off the tree are all memories that will last a lifetime. We gather and cherish such memories and share the experiences with our three-and-a-half-year-old son and the stories with our friends. The roads are for all to see. It is upto the individual whether he/she takes the one less travelled or not. We prefer the ones less travelled for the unexpcted delights that come our way. That is why we are the best candidates.

Our Travel Plan

We fasten them seat belts from home, which is Pune and get ready for the ride of a lifetime. What we ahve finally agreed on is that it can't be only what Kunal wants. Hence, heres what we have dreamt up. A trip three days along the coast of Maharashtra- (pending since 2004) followed by a cut straight towards Uttarakhand. Here we do Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Almora, Nainital and move out down through Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh back home. I suppose the kilometer requirement will be managed. As long as the car has enough horses belted up... yeah we fgure that the stretches of green and city life will make the trip super. What we need is confidence in the car, which will come once we drive through the western ghats which Kunal knows, to a large extent. The Ceida we think won't give up the ghost in the middle of nowhere, but its best for the driver to be aquainted with the car before the journey through unknown waters begins! Hence the route.

Our Travelogue

Part I This was to be the first in a series of journeys we planned along with our wedding. Accordingly, we bought a roadmap to journey across the coast of Maharashtra and set out on the morning of December 9, 2004, three days after we walked down the aisle. Of course things went as planned. We set out in the trusty Indica after a good brunch and found our way to Kolhapur in about three and a half hours, all thanks to the road work in process. Then on, set out to drive through the beautiful Radhanagari ghat. For those of you who have seen it, will remember the thick forest bordering the winding road. My instant dream was to have a tiger cross our path. But we heard not a meew. The bird calls and the far away chatter of monkeys was enough to keep our ears yearning for more. Soon, the sun set. And we drove on, looking for Donje village where we were to park for the night in the forest department’s guest house. It was pitch dark by the time we reached the bungalow. Isolated, all I could see around was darkness. A big creeky gate, typical of a Ramsey flick, guarded the entrance. We were thrilled at the prospect of what lay beyond. The door was opened and I we walked the three odd steps up into the bungalow. Instantly, the dirty linen and the toilet repulsed me. The roof was typical of old bungalows, with the beams and little grooves that make home for creepy crawlies and bird. All I could think about was snakes. Not that I’m scared of them, just that I’m an ignoramus when it comes to identifying the poisonous ones. We had booked the place but the man in charge was not informed so we drove a couple of kms up the ghaat (for cells had no network there then) to call his saheb who assured him we were welcome guests. Huh. Glitches. Not my kind. I hated the bungalow, hated the fact that we had reservations but had to prove we had them and disliked the idea of spending a night wondering which creepy crawly would land on me. Having decided to move on the day after was some reassurance but I was irritated. Exhausted, we snuggled into the blanket we had carried along, and called it a night immediately. Part I The morning, I was singing a different tune. It had something to do with the tune the little feathered fellow who woke me up was crooning. But what really excited me was that the backwaters of Radha Nagri dam stretched for miles opposite the bungalow and we realised we had been driving by the side of the water for ages and not known it, it was so dark and quiet. I went for a walk by the waterside looking for pugmarks – tiger or leopard. Kunal was still snoring. Breakfast over, we decided to go exploring into the Gaur reserve. Forest guard in tow, we saw the shekru, monkeys and lots of trees. Up and down to towers we went to see the view which thankfully was only trees and more trees. Down, we walked to a little plateau with a little watering hole and saw flattened grass. That was where the Gaur rested for the night. Wow I mumbled looking at their hoof marks and at the yellow grass. We went for a drive in the forest in the evening, because we were allowed to. The road wasn’t fantastic in terms of driving, but great for jungle music blasting around. As the sun set, we decided to return. And we had the proverbial FLAT! Husband loves his car, so naturally, there was a stepney and the jack. Some hard work later, we were back at the bungalow relishing dinner that came from a villagers house. We packed our bags and went to bed. This time, I wasn’t worried about the creepy crawlies. I was looking forward to being woken up by my feathered friend. Part III The plan thus far had been followed, perfectly. “We will go down the ghats and take a right. Go to Chiplun, spend the night there and then decide where next. You will love the fresh fish curry made there,” said Kunal. Dreaming about food waiting a couple of hours away always gets me charged. Soaking in the December sunshine, singing and watching the road, we reached the Mumbai Goa Expressway. Chiplun x kms. Goa y kms. “We could go to Goa. It’s the same distance, almost,” said Kunal, reading my thoughts. No way, I countered. We won’t do what every other couple does for their honeymoon. And we took that right. A couple of kms on, I was thinking of Colva - we don’t go to the North. “We can still go to Goa,” said Kunal. Nah, I said and kept very quiet. “Why don’t you just say you want to go there? I can take a U turn, u know,” poked Kunal. I smiled and said, go Goa! So we reached Goa later that night, tired, hungry and very happy with the Indica. More on Goa, later. Stolen weekend Lets move further back, to 2002. It was 1 am. Yes people, 1 am when we set out. We decided in the evening that we would go on holiday. We weren’t married then. Younger, arrogant, super confidant, we knew we would do it. Kunal had to go for an office party that evening and I was taken along, uninvited. Post party, we took off from Pune-Chandani Chowk, for those of you who are aware of that part of Pune then, you will recall an out of city quiet road. From there, via Pirangut, Mulshi and the (later told) dangerous Tamhini ghat, we reached ?. Spent the night there and went to Dive Agar the next morning. Oooh the road that wouldn’t end. Ups and downs, twists and turns. And then the gorgeous white sand and the inviting ocean. Super! The Indica worked purrfectly. We loved it so much, we went back twice after that. ...And the first babe But before the Indica was the Fiat. The trusty black beauty or BB that we called her. It took us to Mahabaleshwar, swerving through the meandering mountain roads in pouring rain, this was the first unofficial long weekend we took before we got married. And she worked soooo well.

Well, what do i say about this man...One of THE BEST i have ever seen behind that wheel, with undying passion and flawless inborn skills!!! I still remember and admire the days he used to religiously and enthusiastically drive down to Mumbai for work every Monday morning and happily depart to Pune on Friday evenings, just to be with his family :) But i guess.. more than that, he just CRAVES to plonk himself in his Baleno, play his music and take off with a 'Who care where the hell we Land' Attitude!! A total Driving Fanatic! Way to go dude!!! You are already a winner in my eyes ;-)

atish munshi

Ive known these guys since college. And that's really way too long back for me to remember. One thing I do remember though, is their love for a "long drive". It started off on Uma's shaky Bajaj Sunny and has, over the years progressed onto the more respectable four wheels. Believe me, if theres a secret to their happiness, this is it!

Chetan Joshi

Hey, that's a great team! One to drive the car and the other to drive the point home that it takes two enjoy a ride anywhere...He has the dare to explore and she has the skill to express :-) It's a winning team already!

Ash

Uma is one of my oldest friend. She is smart, sassy and beautiful. She is a great mother and wife. Kunal and Uma make a great couple. I hope they win the driving challenge.

Swapnila Patil

Uma has been my fren from college time. She is one of the very few people who can manage to remain enegetic, sensible yet cute. I have alwyas liked her for her spirit and her having tremendous faith in herself. She has never thought twice to tell me if she thought I was wrong, and that is a very rare quality these days. I wish her all the very best in everything she does for the simple reason that I know she enjoys what she is!

sapna chakranarayan

kunal....well!!what to say about him???if he had his way he could have lived in his baleno!!i do envy this couple coz every long weekend,or kid's vacation they r ready to hit the road....'BINDASS' is the word for them!!

Inderdeep

Uma....hmmm...I know her very little ... but I must say ... she is a beautiful and bubbly human being.....

Shantanu Karve

Uma has always been committed to anything to takes on. I knew that as soon as soon as I held her in my arms for the first time. OK, OK, it was many many years ago and she was only 10 months old! I am her uncle and I've known her all her life. She attacks everything she does with thoroughness and planning so its not surprising that she's positioned for many successes in her life.
