An unknown slice of Mumbai - A village of Gandhiji’s dreams, but…
Posted By thecouple
In the midst of the urban sprawl in Borivili, hides a quiet setup that is trying keep to Gandhiji’s dreams alive. Surrounded by residential towers and tall buildings, this area is not known to many. Belonging to a co-operative society set up under KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission), Kora Kendra till recently had a bustling ‘industry’ going. It is run by a society and had units that employed locals, making footwear, clothes, apparels, dyes, honey and oil, and even farming, including paddy!
As the living costs went north, the jobs were no longer attractive. Daily wages of about Rs 40/- certainly could not sustain the workers. There was no scope for increasing the prices and the units started getting closed one by one.
Paddy fields are now taken over by grass. A nursery remains. Now Kora Kendra mainly functions as a godown for Khadi products from various parts of Maharashtra/Karnataka. A museum that features Gandhiji’s life story is also part of this little complex.
The impracticalities of sustaining something like this in a city mean that there are no revival plans on cards. We hope the area at least remains as a green lung for the city dwellers.

About us
We, Unny & Bindhu, are a couple currently based in Mumbai. The best introduction can be: He (Unny) - Armchair traveler. Reluctant reader. Would-be writer. Amateur photographer, Day dreamer… and likewise, a pretender of too many things.
She (Bindhu) - Add a few more pretensions - a good cook, a good host, etc. Easily mistaken for a serious, intellectual reader, but far from it. Engineer by qualification; freelance writer by choice. Also volunteers as a teacher for Akanksha, an NGO.
