A 180 minute drive to discover untamed Mumbai - Part 1

Posted By shilpy

When we were given the challenge of taking the Cedia Sports and exploring Mumbai, our first thoughts went to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivili. It was one place that we had previously thought of including in our travel plan, but it did not make it in our final route because of time constraints. Now given the opportunity, we decided to head towards Borivili, to explore the Kanheri Caves.

It was a little difficult for us to believe that right in the middle of the concrete jungle, there existed a National Park and within it, 109 hand-cut rock caves, which date back to the second century. And even intriguing was the fact that these distinctive caves were once the abode of Buddhist monks and also a major centre of university in ancient India. We were standing amidst an architectural marvel and were thinking; how many people in India actually know of this incredible national treasure located in the bustling city of Mumbai.

We reached the National Park and headed straight to the Caves. Well laid meandering roads, covered on either sides by lush greenery, was a far cry from the traffic-filled roads that we had crossed minutes before to reach here. We felt that our theme of ‘Discover Untamed India’ got a perfect head start, with this visit to the Kanheri Caves in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
